¡ Hola a tod@s !

El de hoy no será un post muy largo. Ya he dicho muchas veces que el East River State Park es uno de mis lugares favoritos en esta ciudad para pensar o simplemente fotografiar. Pero hay otro lugar que le ganaría la partida si me hiciesen elegir y ese es el Brooklyn Bridge Park en la zona conocida como Dumbo.

El Brooklyn Bridge Park se divide en varias zonas; aquí tenéis el link con cada una de ellas, pero yo hablaré de las que, particularmente, me llaman más la atención o, simplemente a las que voy con más frecuencia: http://www.brooklynbridgepark.org/park

Mi parte favorita es la que aparece en primer lugar en la web, Empire Fulton Ferry. ¿Por qué? Básicamente porque me da una visión perfecta del skyline con el puente de Brooklyn (mi favorito) acompañando.

 

También aquí está el Jane’s Carousel, un carrusel que cuenta ya con casi 100 años de historia y que es un icono de la zona debido a su colorido y figuras.

Cabe destacar, que esta zona es una de las más productivas en cuanto a expresión artística se refiere. En verano, por ejemplo, podías encontrarte con la colorida escultura, que estuvo ubicada allí durante unos meses, creada por Deborah Kass y que llevaba por título “YO/OY” ya que su significado cambia dependiendo del lado por el que la mires, como las cosas en la vida. Si la vemos por el lado de YO haría referencia al pronombre español o al slang de Yo! que tanto usan aquí. Si es observada por el lado de OY es, básicamente, una palabra que los neoyorquinos usan para expresar su indignación o rabia contra algo. Al menos, eso es lo que me han dicho.

Tras retirar esta escultura, una nueva apareció en el horizonte: “Dumbo” de David Crumley. Se trata de una obra reflectante que, según palabras de su autor, sirve para hacer que el público interactúe y cree su propia obra de arte.

La estatua de los “Perros Paparazzi” también forma parte del paisaje.

Aquí nos podemos encontrar, para añadir algo más, con St. Ann’s Warehouse, un antiguo almacén de tabaco de los 40 transformado en un teatro donde se realizan cientos de representaciones al año.

Otra de las áreas que me gusta es la del Fulton Ferry Landing, donde puedes tomarte un heladito en la archiconocida Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Una casa de bomberos, especializados en situaciones marítimas de 1922, que en 2001, tras los atentados del 11 de septiembre, fue transformada en la heladería que es hoy. Yo sólo lo digo, merece la pena la visita. Rico, rico.

De la parte de Pier 3. Greenway Terrace, me quedo con esta imagen sin duda. ¿A qué apetece un Shake Shack ahora mismo ahí?

Una de los rincones que más me gusta, de entre todos las que estoy describiendo, es el del Pier 1. Ahí se concentran muchas personas cada atardecer o a lo largo del día, para obtener una bonita perspectiva del paisaje. No necesitas mucho, sólo sentarte y mirar cómo la noche cae sobre Manhattan. De las mejores experiencias aquí y además, ¡ GRATIS ! (muy importante en esta ciudad).

El último de mis descubrimientos en este maravilloso lugar, fue en la zona del Pier 6, concretamente en el Liberty Lawn. Allí estaba la escultura de UNDERSTANDING, una estatua de Martin Creed que giraba sobre sí misma y que te invitaba a cuestionarte los múltiples significados que esta palabra puede tener.

Como veis, una zona de la ciudad puede dar mucho de sí. Siempre está bien poder escapar del mundanal ruido aunque estés dentro.

Today’s will not be a very long post. I’ve said many times that East River State  Park is one of my favorite places in this city to think or just photograph.  But there is another place that would win the game if I had to choose and  that is Brooklyn Bridge Park in the area known as Dumbo.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is divided into several areas; here you have the link to  each of them, but I’m going to talk about those that catch my eye  or, simply the ones I go to most frequently: http://www.brooklynbridgepark.org/park.

My favorite part is the one that appears first on the web, Empire Fulton Ferry. Why? Basically because it gives me a perfect view of the skyline with the  Brooklyn Bridge (love it!).

Also, here is Jane’s Carousel, a carousel that is almost 100 years and which is an icon because of its colorful figures.

It shoud be noted that this area is one of the most productive in  terms of artistic expression.  In summer, for example, you could  find a colorful sculpture that was there for a few months,  created by Deborah Kass and entitled “YO / OY” since its meaning changes depending on the side you look at it, as things in life.  If we observe it from the YO side, it would refer to the Spanish pronoun or the YO! used in American slang. If it is seen from OY  side, it is basically a word that New Yorkers use to express their anger or outrage  against something. At least, that’s what I’ve been told.

After removing this sculpture, a new one appeared in the horizon: “Dumbo” by David Crumley. It is a reflective work that, in words of its author, serves to make the public interact and create their own masterpiece.

The “Paparazzi Dogs” sculpture is part of the landscape too.

Here we can find, to add something more, St. Ann’s Warehouse, a 1940’s old tobacco store transformed into a theater where hundreds of representations take place every year.

Another part I like is Fulton Ferry Landing, where you can have a delicious ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. A  1922 fireboat house that in 2001, after 9/11, changed into the ice cream shop that is today. I just say, the visit is worth it. Yummy!

From Pier 3, Greenway Terrace, I really love this picture. Are you up for a Shake Shack right there?

Another part, and one of the ones I like the most of all I’m describing is the Pier 1. It’s crowded every sunset or throughout the day, to get a nice perspective of the landscape. You do not need much, just sit and observe the night fall over Manhattan. One of the best experiences you can live here and, very important, FREE! (something remarkable in this city).

One of my last discoveries in this wonderful place was ,in the area of Pier 6, the Liberty Lawn. UNDERSTANDING, a statue by Martin Creed was there, revolving around itself and inviting you to aske yourself about the multiple meanings that this word can have. As you see, even just a part of the city has tons of things to offer. It is always good to escape from the wordly noise even when you are in it.
